Donna Giffune faced every parent’s nightmare: Her son, Ben, was
diagnosed with a brain tumor. Her life turned upside down. How will she
be able to care for Ben while also raising two young daughters? Many of
us in this situation would just collapse, but I was impressed with how she
found an inner strength to be an advocate for Ben’s care and embraced
the challenges she, as a parent, faced. At its essence this is a story of
love, and how we will do anything possible for the people we care about.
It is an inspiring read.
Biography:
Donna Giffune is a physical therapist, elementary teacher and registered nurse, gaining each degree from upstate colleges—Russell Sage, SUNY Plattsburgh and SUNY Adirondack. Donna has enjoyed writing throughout her life, receiving the Parnassus Award in Creative Writing, publishing poetry in various local collections and publishing a children’s book, I Love You With My Heart. When her six-year-old son Ben was diagnosed with a brain tumor, she used her education and unwavering determination to fiercely advocate for his life, believing that a diagnosis did not get to define his life. Besides raising Ben, her three other children and writing, she has many hobbies, including flying kites, kayaking and playing with her kitty Lora Lee. She lives in Saratoga Springs, New York, near her four children and three grandchildren.
A beginning...
“Hello,” I whispered to the blue eyes gazing at me. They continued their steady, curious stare.
In that quiet moment, a stillness enveloped us, and a voice emerged within me. It was a voice from my childhood, one intertwined with my spiritual journey—a gentle, clear, and unmistakably real voice. It whispered, “This child is your life’s lesson.” The weight of those words resonated deeply within me, anchoring the swirling uncertainty of the moment and binding us—my son and me—to the promise of an unknown future. Maybe my son was a divine appointment after all. I held that memory close, never sharing it with anyone.
…As Ben grew, and as I navigated the journey of growing alongside him, I observed and pondered the unfolding of our story. And indeed, as
foretold by that inner voice, Ben became the teacher of my life’s most profound lessons. This is the chronicle of our journey together.
“When a child is born…so is a mother.”
